Movies that should have been awful, but weren’t: Galaxy Quest

How was Galaxy Quest so good?  I mean, it’s really, really good.  It could have been utterly terrible, but it wasn’t.  Someone from Newsweek said about the movie, “FUNNY!”  It’s true, it’s right up there on the DVD cover and everything.

Foremost, it probably has to do with the acting talent they had.  Tim Allen as the Kirk character.  Sigourney Weaver as the superfluous communications officer.  Alan Rickman as the classically trained actor pigeon-holed into a crappy Spock type role.  Tony Shalhoub of Monk fame.

Oh and Sam Rockwell as the obligatory red shirt guy, before he was really a famous actor, in probably my favorite role in the film.  I don’t know what that little editing job was put together for (Coolidge Corner Theatre?) but it’s awesome to see a full minute of Guy doing his thing.

They had a super deep talent pool for the smaller character parts too: Justin Long (“Hi, I’m  a mac”), who is actually a good actor.  Enrico Colantoni, Patrick Breen, Missi Pyle, Jed Rees, Rainn Wilson (Dwight from The Office U.S.) and Dian Bachar (Squeak from BASEketball) all play the awkward aliens perfectly.

The writing, special effects, storyline, and everything else being done well supported the strong acting talent to make a really good movie.
